Let’s review the functions of the mind just a bit.
The Mind is like the ocean water. It is constantly impacted by the sense doors which makes the movement in the mind. It is compared to the waves in the ocean. The waves are the relative force that moves with the ocean which is the absolute. As well, the absolute moves in the waves. They are inseparable. And the waves and ocean are not yet the whole of the mind. The waves and the ocean are relative to one another esepcially when we humans feel good about our life. As we know, however, life does not always feel good or safe or even absolute.
But our recognition of the relative in the absolute and the absolute in the relaitve is a solid place to understand the mind. The sense doors signal the Mind or if we will, the movement of the water for ill and good. Sometimes we like what shows up and sometimes we dislike what shows up.
This is the usual state of the mind for the many. For those of us who study their Mind, we benefit from several functions which are: Record, Receive, Classify, React and Ego. This especially important for those who are unaccustomed to the study of their mind.
What we must do is to see the Mind as a body of water that records, receives, classifies and reacts to the movement of the sense doors on our mind. When we are new to this understanding we recognize that we tend to blame and shame the world for our misery rather than practice studying the Mind’s functions.
We, however, are far better off when we study the movement of the water as one would study the waves and tides in the ocean. When we practice in this way we begin to STOP reacting and acting on what comes into the Mind. This STOP prevents the conditioned Ego to take charge and act.
Overtime we recognize the calm peace that comes when the Mind is still and empty of reactions to the sense doors. It takes practice. We must be willing to practice.
The image below is a good reminder of one way we can manage the mind.
Don’t get trapped by the Mind’s Entanglements.
Practice taking charge of what comes into the Mind.
Don’t give up. Keep going.
